Metal Shingles Vs. Asphalt Shingles

Metal Shingles

There are tons of different options when it comes to roofing. You can get fully metal roofs, terracotta shingles, tar paper roof, flat roof, and even asphalt shingles. That means that you do have a great deal of freedom and flexibility when it comes to choosing the roof that is going to work for you. Metal shingles are a great alternative if you do not want typical asphalt shingles.

These shingles are made of metal, but they are not the same thing as a metal or tin roof. A tin roof is made of full sheets of metal instead of shingles and therefore has less chance that there is going to be leaking between the shingles and that the shingles are going to come off. Metal shingles do last longer than asphalt shingles, and they are going to come in more colors as well. Metal shingles can last up to 20 years if they are well cared for.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are what most roofs are clad with. These are flexible, they come in Strips of three or four shingles per strip, and they are overlapped on one another to create a continuous sheet of shingles to protect the roof underneath.

With asphalt shingles, you can expect them to last for about 10 to 15 years. They will be more likely to be damaged by storms, damaged by things like hail, ice and wind, and they do deteriorate more with direct sunlight.

Asphalt shingles are going to be less expensive than metal shingles, but they do come in fewer colors. You are going to be able to get these shingles on faster as they take a bit less work to have put on. Either metal shingles or asphalt shingles are going to protect the roof and are going to be a great choice.
